My Top 5 Most Romantic Destinations

Home / Uncategorized / My Top 5 Most Romantic Destinations

If you’ve read any of my work, you know I love to travel. I was raised by travellers and I’m doing my best to continue that tradition with my own kids. I love travelling so much that all of my books take place in a locale I’ve not only visited, but that I deem romantic at its very core.

I started writing while I was travelling for a living and spent 8 years on the road, dreaming of love in every stop I made, so, I’ve collected my favs here for you in celebration of Valentine’s Day and all things love. So, if you’re ready, here we go. Don’t agree with one or have something to add? Comment with your favs and they just might make it into my next book!

  1. Ireland. It’s clear to those who have read my latest series that I love everything about Ireland. I fell in love with Ireland as a kid, travelled there as a grown up and took my husband back there a few years ago. A devoted Nora Roberts and Maeve Binchy fan, there was no other location I wanted to write about more. From the dramatic cliffs of Moher and Kerry, to the vibrant cities of Dublin, Belfast and Galway this country is the perfect romantic vacation for the adventurous beer and whiskey loving couple.
  2. The Rhine River. I spent a few weeks travelling the Rhine 10 years ago and I’ve longed to go back. Starting in the mysterious Budapest and ending in historical Czech Republic, the Rhine river is the perfect setting for a cool cruise at sunset, wrapped in warm blankets watching the castles and villages crawl by. Stop at a few vineyards, rent a bicycle along historic paths and spend some time in my favourite European city, Vienna. The Rhine is perfect for that couple who love the European experience at a slow, romantic pace.
  3. DisneyWorld. Oh yeah. I said that. So, in my 47 years, I’ve been to Disney as a child, as a teen, as a 21 year old with a friend, as a parent with children and I’m telling you, there’s NOTHING more romantic than watching my husband squish his 6’3″ self into the Space Mountain rocket ship, knees in his face, pirate hat on for Pirate night ’cause his youngest daughter wanted him to laughing his head off, getting off and holding his little girl tight with love and excitement. That’s it for me folks and my husband and I have been a lot of places on our own and this one wins for me, hands down.
  4. Maui. So, I had to come back from Disney with a real solid. So, the one and only time I’ve been to Maui was for a conference I attended for work and had to take my husband with me because I was 4 months pregnant and had Hyperemesis Gravidarum (that condition that Princess Kate has when she’s pregnant) so working and keeping down food and being safe was a huge struggle. But the minute we landed and I gave the poor flight attendant back their offered puke bag after an eight hour flight of the dry heaves, I could smell paradise. We stayed at a luxury resort on the beach and lounged by the pool in between work sessions and it was incredible. We walked the ocean every day, drove to hidden coves and laid in bed with the ocean breeze the only sound we could hear. Paradise.
  5. Whistler Mountain. I can think of NOTHING more romantic than being snowed into a ski chalet, roaring fire, whiskey and cheese our only source of sustenance. No internet. Phones for emergencies only. Snow coming down. Come on! The beautiful village of Whistler is the perfect ski chalet location. Tall, imperious mountains, trendy coffee shops and wine bars and gorgeous people everywhere. Sigh.

So there you have it. My short list of my most favourite romantic destinations. Now, I’m sure you have your own list. Come on, tell me the place you’ve been that stars in your love story!
